Ven. (Dr) Omalpe Sobhita Thero
Born in Sri Lanka, Venerable was ordained at an early age of eleven.
After obtaining his doctorate degree from the University of Delhi, India,
he returned to Sri Lanka to serve the people.
In 1993, he founded the Sri Bodhiraja Foundation in Embilipitiya
and initiated many educational, social and development programmes.
He is also a strong advocate of animal rights and environmental protection and
work in Cambodia for a year as enviromental advisor to the United Nations Development Programme.
His dhamma work has earned him much respect both in Sri Lanka and abroad. A former Member of
Parrliament in Sri Lanka, he is responsible for the incorporation of a
Bill for the Control of Alcohol and Tobacco in Sri Lanka and the pending Bill
against Unethical Conversion. Ven. Sobhita Thero is a Member of the
Board of Directors of the Pali and Buddhist University in Sri Lanka.
In recent years, he has been a prominent figure in global inter-religious
conferences to champion for better protection for Buddhism against
growing threats from globalization, consumerism and unethical conversion.
